In 1972, Gamble & Huff, a team of producers and songwriters with whom the O’Jays had been working for several years, signed the group to their Philadelphia International label. In 1963, the band took the name “The O’Jays” in tribute to Cleveland radio disc jockey and over the years several members have changed, but the core, original lead singers Eddie Levert and Walter Williams, continue to front the group. As teenagers in Canton, Ohio, they formed a band originally consisting of Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, William Powell, Bobby Massey and Bill Isles. Walter Williams and Eddie Levert first met when they were the ages of 6 and 7 respectively.
The O’Jays are still hitting the road with the same electrifying energy they’ve had for over 50 years. The O’Jays are touring history, a connection to an era and a sound that formed the soundtrack for the lives of several generations. “Another Journey” enjoyed success from the hit “I Who Have Nothing” as well as the uptempo track “Settle,” produced by Randy Jackson, with whom she previously collaborated with on her Grammy-winning album, “At Last.” Knight also enjoyed the success of her song “You and I Ain’t Nothin’ No More” which appeared over the end credits of the critically acclaimed Lee Daniels film THE BUTLER. In 2015, A portion of Atlanta’s State Route 9 from Peachtree Street to 14th Street was officially named Gladys Knight Highway.GLADYS KNIGHT AND THE O’JAY’S are coming to Columbus – together in concert, doing full headlining performances on Sunday, October 11th, 2015 at the Palace Theatre. Her involvement in other creative undertakings, business ventures and humanitarian activities has been extensive, and has brought her honors from industry and community alike. In addition, this past March she received the National Medal of Arts along with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bruce Springsteen, Jose Feliciano and Mindy Kaling. This past 2022 holiday season she starred in “I’m Glad It’s Christmas” on Great American Family and received the 45 th Kennedy Center Honors for Lifetime Artistic Achievements along with George Clooney, Amy Grant, Tania Leone and U2 in December.
Knight sang the National Anthem on yet another major sports stage at the 2021 NBA All-Star Game. In 2019, she competed on the inaugural season of “The Masked Singer” and sang the National Anthem at Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta. She appeared on ABC’s 14 th season of “Dancing With The Stars” in 2012. Knight has continued to spread her acting wings, making a guest star appearance in the FOX hit show “Star” and appearing in the film “Almost Christmas” in 2016, both which were produced and directed by Lee Daniels. “At Last” showed the world that she still has what it takes to record a hit album, employing the talents of contemporary producers like Randy Jackson.
